Today I'd like, if I may, to show you this comment from Slashdot, posted on 2001-09-12. I particularly draw your attention to the line, "If we lose even the slightest amount of freedom the terrorists have WON." Now check out the latest news about this Real ID act (PDF warning) which just got passed. By attaching the bill as a rider to another bill which offers extra money for soldiers in Iraq, which nobody would dream of voting against, it will now be necessary for every adult American to carry an ID card.
I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that the political situation in America has now gone from comical to scary. Even ignoring the fact that this ID card measure will bring nothing more than a false sense of security (there will always, always be fake IDs) while invading privacy, there is the fact that Section 102(c)(1) of the act (page 83 of the PDF I just linked) reads, and I quote,
IN GENERAL- Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Secretary of Homeland Security shall have the authority to waive, and shall waive, all laws such Secretary, in such Secretary's sole discretion, determines necessary to ensure expeditious construction of the barriers and roads under this section.
Got that? That means Secretary of Homeland Security is above American law. If he thinks you're in the way of the fences he's trying to build, he can kill you. Literally. Call that an extreme example if you want, but how many people can fail to realise that this is an inherently extremely dangerous law to pass?
